How our journey began
In the late 1980s, a kind-hearted couple settled in South Gippsland. Faye, having retired, started an incredible mission to help cats. She used her skills to bake cakes and make jams, selling them in Inverloch to fund her project. Her main goal was to desex privately owned cats to keep them healthy and prevent overpopulation. With the goal of finding these kittens loving homes, she went above and beyond, even financing the venture through her quaint stall by the shop. Two supportive friends from Melbourne jumped in to assist, opening a second-hand shop named Paws Galore in Wonthaggi to raise additional funds. Starting from a humble location in a back lane, Paws Galore eventually moved to a larger space due to the growing support and need for their cause. Despite the financial challenges, Faye remained determined and kept her focus on caring for cats in need, funding countless desexing operations with the help of a few kind individuals. These volunteers welcomed cats and kittens into their homes, taking care of their needs mainly out of pocket, as the vet bills consumed most of the proceeds from Paws. Trips to the AAPS Vet Clinic in Keysborough were frequent, offering cost-effective medical care, allowing cat owners to contribute a minimal amount towards the treatments. Educating cat owners on the benefits of neutering and indoor living to safeguard wildlife and their pets was always a priority. Even during tough times when funds were scarce, the community's support never waned. Cats that were too sick or wild to be rehomed were given a sanctuary by this remarkable woman on her expansive 108-acre land. Reflecting on these humble beginnings fills us with gratitude. Today, South Gippsland Animal Aid boasts numerous devoted carers who continue the legacy of that generous lady Faye, ensuring every cat and dog in need receives help, irrespective of our financial situation. Her spirit of sacrifice and love for animals shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration for us all.
